Fascinators

In this Art project year 8 students were challenged to explore using paper as a sculptural material. They experimented and developed folding, cutting and tearing techniques before making a range of 2D fascinator design drawings which were then translated into 3d form producing experimental, wearable sculpture. Inspiration was taken from current designers and sculptors Peter Callesen and Lia Griffin.

House Drama

There was much excitement as the school came together in February for the House Drama on the last afternoon of half term, especially as John Pickard from Hollyoaks travelled all the way from filming in Liverpool to join Mr Rowe on the judging panel!

The four Houses put together a Key Stage 3 and a senior play; each play was improvised and written by the girls themselves. The standard was very high throughout the afternoon with a selection of innovative interpretations and strong performances.

Here are some of the judges’ comments:
‘A very good ensemble piece, a brave choice to make, you could hear every word’
‘Good story structure and excellent characterization’
‘Observant, good use of the language of comedy, vibrant’
‘Topical, believable, beautifully interactive with intelligent scene changes’
‘Good use of costume, you understood your audience’

It was a joy to see just what the girls can achieve when given free rein, well done to all involved!

Video Work

Maya in year 13 made this film as part of an art project which drew on exploring movement in painting after visiting the 'Futurism' exhibition at the Tate Modern.
"I decided to create a video which experiments with symmetry and movement. It was very important to me that this worked well with the soundtrack."

Iceland Trip October 2009

We don’t believe that school trips should always be about listening to lectures from the teacher or filling in worksheets. On our fourth annual visit to Iceland, our pupils were free to wander wherever wonder took them. They crawled into lava caves, stayed up all night to watch the northern lights, pulled on boots and waded into waterfalls, took a boat across an iceberg lagoon and bravely sampled the infamous rotten shark. Many girls said that it was the best holiday of their life.

Classics Trip to Sicily

Over half term, the Classics department organised a trip to Sicily for 32 year 11 and 6th form classicists.  We took a whistle stop tour of the island, taking in some of the best preserved classical sites in the Mediterranean including the majestic Doric temple at Segesta, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento and the Romano-Greek theatre at Taormina. Girls and staff had an amazing time and the islands rich classical history certainly did not disappoint.
