Enrichment Opportunities

As well as specialist teaching across the full spectrum of academic subjects, weekly enrichment lessons help to open doors, hearts and minds.

Each term, all students in Year 7 to Year 9 are able to choose from a range of exciting options beyond the core curriculum that aim to expand horizons. The enlightening Mehr Licht! programme named after our school motto (the dying words of German poet and polymath, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe) – allows students to enjoy the process of learning for learning’s sake and to develop new skills. During a double period each week, girls are free to choose stimulating and varied classes. This term’s options include masterclasses in electronic music production, an introduction to architecture, first aid training, scratch programming and coding, photography workshops, Japanese, sports science, upcycling/re-engineering plastic waste, and poetry lab.

Girls also follow a compulsory element: in Year 7, there are courses in developing healthy friendships and mindfulness; in Year 8 and 9, all girls study Global Issues, taking a deeper look at the international news agenda, exploring current affairs, international politics and the historical roots of conflict.

Lara in Year 8 reports back on what she’s learnt from the Level 1 & 2 St John’s Ambulance First Aid course: “I really enjoyed the lessons, and learnt some very important skills… the day after learning about burns, I scalded myself with hot water. At first I freaked out as I was in a lot of pain, but I used my first aid skills to calm myself down and deal with the situation. It’s now all healed, but without my training I wouldn’t have been able to cope so well and I managed to avoid any scarring. On the course, I also learnt how to deal with asthma, choking, fainting, bleeding and severe allergic reactions. I am now taking the Level 3, consolidating my understanding and learning so much more, from seizures to spinal injuries. I would really encourage others take take part.”
