A Splendid Centenary

Former teacher Miss Nesta Phillips celebrates her 100th birthday today.

Miss Phillips has had a life-long association with the Girls’ Day School Trust devoted to teaching Classics, first at Brighton & Hove and then for 25 years at South Hampstead High School, where she was also Deputy Head.

She imparted her passion for the Classics to hundreds of her pupils and left them in no doubt that they were acquiring the key to the richest of cultures. Her fine scholarship and dedication were an inspiration to both her pupils and colleagues, and her school trips to Greece are fondly remembered by many of our alumnae.

Cards and congratulations have been sent from pupils and alumnae, kindly organised by Lena Basu (Class of 1966). We all wish Miss Phillips the very happiest of birthdays.

A tribute to Miss Phillips from the 1980 school magazine.
