Summer Sports

The final half of the summer term has seen enthusiastic participation and outstanding achievement in a range of sports.

At our annual ‘sports for all’ week, pupils had fun trying out a range of activities including bounce fit, croquet, karate, spikeball, trampolining and some speedy go-karting. Lunchtime House dodgeball contests proved similarly popular, with fast footwork, fierce flinging, and a lot of laughter. Team spirit was similarly evident at a sunny sports day, with girls (and staff) competing with great gusto to accumulate points for their Houses, with nine new records set on track and field – read more here.

Other sporting highlights over the past half term have included:

  • Our athletes’ best ever results at the Track & Field Cup, with our Junior girls finishing 1st and Inter girls finishing 2nd at the regional finals
  • Two cricketers being selected for the GDST squad at the APEX T20 Tournament, and four cricketers selected for the GDST team to play the MCC at our Sports Ground
  • Our U15 hardball cricket team winning the GDST rally for the second year in a row
  • Our U18 tennis team qualifying for the Aberdare Cup National Tennis Finals, finishing 15th in the country

Sporting excellence was also championed at last week’s sports awards evening, where GB and Olympic swimmer, Lizzie Simmonds, gave an inspiring address – a wonderful occasion to celebrate so many fantastic individual and team performances; congratulations to all our pupils who have shown such sporting commitment and talent over the past 12 months. This year’s Most Improved Team of the Year went to the unstoppable U15 netball team who have gone from strength to strength, winning the Middlesex Finals; the Team of the Year Award went to the ski team for their clean sweep of team trophies this year, winning the British Open, British Schoolgirls’ Races in Flaine, as well as the British Schoolgirls’ Indoor Races and the ESSKIA Indoor and Outdoor Championships. Alexandra in the Lower Sixth was awarded the Elsie Janner Cup for her Outstanding Contribution to Sport, and Alice in Year 11 was named as Sportsperson of the Year for her successes in netball, tennis, skiing and cricket.
