AI Week
Our first Artificial Intelligence Awareness Week encouraged students to engage with AI both critically and ethically.
Breaktime activities included training AI through drawing and exploring 3D protein biochemistry harnessing AI, whilst lunchtime sessions involved philosophical talks and workshops led by teachers and Sixth Formers, and a film screening of 2001 Space Odyssey. In the library, teachers gave AI-related readings and pupils were directed to a range of AI-related literature to further expand their horizons. Pupils were invited to create posters exploring how AI may impact future careers, with entries judged at the end of the week. Congratulations to our winners, Dinuli and Genevieve in Year 7, whose poster explored the benefits and disadvantages of AI on a career as a mathematician.
Earlier this term, we hosted a showcase debate on the role of AI in education followed by a parent seminar to discuss the school’s approach to AI and how we expect it to shape our pupils’ learning environment. Over the past few months, we have introduced heat maps for both pupils and staff as well as given assemblies to different year groups on relevant aspects of AI. The Senior Leadership Team also visited a tech start up company to discover how AI is being used in industry and explore the skills that graduates are needing in this rapidly evolving landscape.
Director of Teaching & Staff Development, Mr Merk, commented: “This term’s focus on AI has demonstrated that our girls are incredibly attuned to the complexities of this technology on our changing world. Though the AI landscape is shifting daily, our community’s approach remains steady, considered and inquisitive, prioritising safety and the safeguarding the learning process. The dialogue we’ve started has empowered students to discuss their views openly and thoughtfully, balancing optimism with caution.”
