Scholars’ Journals
Our Academic Scholars have contributed essays on the theme of connection for the latest editions of our academic journals.
The Beacon features a collection of essays written by our scholars in Year 11 and the Lower Sixth, with topics ranging from cartography, correlation and cryptocurrency to Homeric epics, the legal system and schizophrenia. The Pilot Light brings together essays from our younger scholars in Years 7 to 10, with fascinating insights into a range of subjects, including early synapse formation, the British Empire, contemporary architecture, and Ancient Greek graffiti. The cover artworks for the journals were created by two of our Sixth Form Art Scholars.
Our 2024/25 Deputy Head Girl (Academic & Scholarship), Katie, oversaw the latest publications: “Seeing the multitude of ways in which students approached the theme has been inspiring, and it reflects the wide array of ideas and perspectives that are encountered at South Hampstead.”
Each year, pupils in our Academic Scholarship programme attend Cross-Curriculum Enrichment Programme events, Academic Symposia, contribute to journals, join a cultural trip, and enjoy a celebratory quiz and pizza night. The programme aims to foster intellectual curiosity, critical discussion, and a love of learning in a context that foregrounds inter-year links. Academic Scholarships are awarded on entry to Year 7 and the Sixth Form.
