Celebrating Scholarship

Our Year 7 & 8 Academic Scholars met in Oakwood this week for our inaugural Lower School Academic Scholars’ Symposium.

Tasked with exploring the theme of ‘ignition’, each scholar spoke about the research and writing process for her chosen topic. Fascinating talks included how Classical Music ignites the brain, the Hong Kong protests, the ignition of wildfires and the sparking of a new technological era. Each of the scholars in Year 7 and 8 received guidance and mentoring from a more senior Academic Scholar, in Year 10,  who also attended the two symposia. The girls’ final essays will appear in a new publication next term: Pilot Light – the Lower School Academic Scholars’ Journal, alongside essays from Year 9 scholars, who will have their own symposium next term. The girls will also enjoy a cultural visit and Lower School Scholars’ Dinner in the summer term.

Year 11 and Sixth Form Academic Scholars contribute to the Beacon, our annual scholars’ journal – the second edition, on the theme of navigation, will be published later this term.

Academic Scholarships are awarded based on performance in the entrance/scholarship examination – open to all pupils – the year prior to joining the Sixth Form. Academic Scholarships may also be awarded at 11+ based on performance in the entrance examination or, for pupils transitioning from South Hampstead Junior School, as recommended by the Head of the Junior School.
