Edinburgh Debate Champions

Students triumphed at a competition in the Scottish capital, with novice and seasoned debaters making the finals and winning gold.

Twenty students ventured up to Scotland for our first debating residential since before the pandemic to compete in the Edinburgh University Juniors Debating Competition.  Accompanied by Dr Etheridge and our Director of Debating, Mr Hepburn, the group travelled by train, with penguin mascot in tow, before checking into their hostel. A busy day of debating ensued on the Saturday, as 47 teams from across the UK assembled to argue motions such as whether marriage should be abolished and if COP27 should be the last COP.

All our pupils did phenomenally well, with five of our 10 teams reaching the finals. A special congratulations to Ada and Imogen in Year 9 who won the Gold Final, ranking 1st and 2nd as individual speakers; Nihaarika and Sophie in Year 10, who also reached the Gold Final and ranked joint 3rd and joint 7th as individual speakers; and Izzy and Ria in Year 10 who won the Silver Final, with Izzy joint 9th as an individual speaker. Our younger debaters were also outstanding, with four Year 7 pupils making the Silver Finals in their first ever competition! Well done to Lakshanaa, Nina, Lucinda and Hosanna. Lakshanaa and Nina were also ranked joint 9th as individual speakers, and joint 3rd out of all the novice speakers.

Before returning to London, the group enjoyed a tour of the city, taking in the Scottish Parliament, Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh Castle, as well as a brisk trek up Arthur’s Sear to admire the views from the summit.
