Elite Sports

Our top athletes have had a great start to the new year across a range of sports.

Testament to the growing reputation of sport at South Hampstead, highlights of the term so far have included: U13 footballers progressing to the next round of the ESFA Cup; U12 and U13 cricketers representing Camden, both placing second at competitive indoor tournaments; U14 swimmers picking up team Bronze at the national GDST gala; Marina in Year 9 qualifying for the Swim England National Championships, recording the fastest 100m breaststroke time for a 13 year old; and three of our ski squad being selected for the British Children’s ski team – Audrey in Year 8, Evie in Year 9, and Alice in Year 10.

Our ski squad also had a triumphant two days at the British Schoolgirls’ Races in the French Alps last week; in the Giant Slalom, all skiers placed in the top 25, earning the A team the top podium place overall whilst in the slalom races our B team finished top of their category, with all skiers placing in the top 18 out of 139 racers. Congratulations to Audrey who placed first in the Giant Slalom, slalom and overall in the U14 age category, and to Alice who finished in the top 3 in the Giant Slalom and slalom in the U16 category – and 3rd best skier overall!

Whilst our ethos of inclusive excellence aims to promote sporting opportunities for everyone, our Going for Gold and sport scholarship programmes support some of our most talented athletes. The sports department recently appointed three new scholars in Year 9 – for football, netball and all-round sports – and have introduced a new GCSE in Physical Education, with our first cohort taking the exam in summer 2025.
