Flowering Eco Poppies

At 3D Design Club, students are producing zero plastic, ‘plantable’ eco-poppies for Remembrance Day.

With many of The Royal British Legion’s volunteers unable to carry out face to face collections for the Poppy Appeal due to Covid-19 this year, pupils were keen to find an innovative way to help.  Girls have been busy in the design studios,  creating ‘flowering’ poppies, using special biodegradable paper embedded with wild flower seeds. To raise funds for the charity, pupils at the lunchtime design club have been assembling hundreds of laser-cut, zero plastic poppies using biodegradable glue. After being worn, the handmade poppies can be soaked in water then planted in soil, growing back as flowers. Parents can order and donate online, while a limited number of the special edition poppies are available from a local flower stall and coffee shop in a bid to support local businesses too.

Design & Technology Teacher, Ms Poppy Pearce, commented: “Our pupils have been really motivated to help fundraise for the Poppy Appeal during these difficult times. This project engages the girls on many levels… they are very enthused by sustainability issues and are always inspired to come up with better design solutions. These poppies are a wonderful tribute to those who made sacrifices in the war and provide a welcome symbol of hope for a better future.”

The initiative featured in the Ham & High this week.

Earlier this term, South Hampstead was featured as the ‘best school for green ideas’ in The Week’s Independent Schools Guide, before winning the Independent Schools of the Year Green Award for Environmental Achievement 2020.
