GDST Junior Maths Conference

The annual GDST Junior Maths Conference moved online this year, opened by our very own Mrs Somers.

South Hampstead’s Year 6 teacher and former pupil kicked off the conference, sharing what she loves most about maths: from theorems and everyday applications to puzzles and problem-solving.  Year 6 pupils enjoyed a range of mathematical challenges and activities, studying Pascal’s Sierpinski pyramid and modelling balloons into enormous, colourful tetrahedrons. As news of rising Covid-19 infection rates was hitting the headlines, our mathematicians were learning about exponential growth – a timely session for potential future leaders.

On the final day of the conference, the girls aced the live, online quiz, up against pupils from GDST schools across the country, tackling lots of tricky questions using real world examples of bank statements and financial management. Well done to everyone involved for a wonderful week of collaboration and mathematical exploration.
