Going for Gold

This week, our Going for Gold pupils heard from more athletes at the top of their game as part of their virtual speakers programme.

South Hampstead’s Going for Gold programme supports and develops our elite athletes. Over 30 selected athletes with the ability or potential to perform at county level are currently part of the programme; their sports range from football, netball, dance and gymnastics to rock-climbing, fencing and skiing. Two of our Year 7 Going for Gold participants, cricketers Dia and Alice (who is also one of our Sports Scholars), have just been selected to play for Middlesex.

So far this year, pupils have had a fantastic line up of inspiring speakers, including Olympic athlete and medallist, Anyika Onuora, and nutritionist, Elly Rees. This week, they joined virtual sessions with England netballer, Eleanor Cardwell, professional dancer, Emily Taylor, and ultimate marathon runner, Fin Hampton.

One Year 8 pupil commented: “The Going for Gold speaker series has been immensely beneficial in terms of physical and performance aspects, but it has also been helpful from a psychological and social perspective. I’ve learnt a lot from each speaker and have come to appreciate an even wider variety of sports.”

The Going for Gold programme is led by our Deputy Director of Sport, Miss Hayes, who used to play for Queens Park Rangers in the women’s premier league south division. To keep up with South Hampstead’s latest sporting news, follow the PE Department on Twitter
