Music Scholar Scoops Top Prize

One of our youngest Music Scholars has won first prize in the prestigious Charlton House Young Artists’ Award. The award is one of two annual solo competitions open to students aged under 19 at the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Twelve-year-old Oyuka, in Year 8, was up against a strong field, including a number of talented musicians who were significantly older. Oyuka played, on alto saxophone, Kovács arrangement of V. Monti’s Czardas and the 2nd and 3rd movements of James Rae’s Sonatina – an incredible, award-winning performance.

Like all South Hampstead Music Scholars, Oyuka contributes much to the musical life of the school. Our gifted scholars regularly give lunchtime and teatime recitals and perform at a range of ambitious concerts throughout the year; they also frequently win local and national competitions. Oyuka is currently studying for her Grade 8 Saxophone and is an accomplished pianist; she also sings as part of the school’s Chorale and is a member of South Hampstead’s Symphonic Wind Band, Junior Jazz Band and Concert Band.

Music Scholarships are available for entry at 11+ and Sixth Form. For more information, please contact senioradmissions@shhs.gdst.net
