Top Cricketing School
South Hampstead has, once again, been named as one of the best schools in the UK for cricket.
For the second consecutive year, South Hampstead has been recognised by The Cricketer magazine as one of the leading schools in the country for cricket. The Cricketer’s annual guide features the nation’s top 20 girls’ schools, judged against an extensive set of criteria, including commitment to cricket in the curriculum, facilities, fixtures and coaching.
South Hampstead has a strong cricketing legacy thanks to the likes of alumna Netta Rheinberg MBE (1911 – 2006) who played for the English women’s team. Cricket was reintroduced as a key summer sport at South Hampstead several years ago, with pupils of all ages now playing at our sports ground’s premier league pitch, which is also home to Hampstead Cricket Club. Pupils are introduced to the sport in the Junior School, before softball and hardball training is developed in the Senior School, led by our Head of Cricket, Mr Learoyd.
In recent years, our Senior School teams have progressed to the advanced stages of several national tournaments and, earlier this year, were crowned GDST national champions for the second year in a row. Last term, one of our Year 7 Sports Scholars was selected to play for Middlesex, joining several others who play at county level; three of our top players represented the GDST U18 Cricket Team in a match against the MCC; and a Year 10 cricketer was selected for the National Fast Bowling Academy, as enthusiasm for the sport continues to gather pace.
