1876 Society: Expanding Opportunity

We celebrated the impact of our 1876 Society since it was established five years ago.

At our annual 1876 Society meeting, Mrs Paul reflected on the significant impact the society has had on the school’s bursary programme since 2021. More than 200 people have become members by making an annual or transformational gift, contributing close to £4 million in total. This collective generosity has substantially moved the bar in terms of access and opportunity, increasing the number of Senior School pupils receiving an award from 1 in 28 to 1 in 12 this year. In September, three new pupils will join the school with full fee awards, bringing the number of girls benefitting from the programme to over 50.

Mrs Paul was joined by some of the eight bursary award holders who are currently in the Lower Sixth; pupil bursary ambassador Maddie perfectly captured the value of this support: “I could never have anticipated the way in which my education would effect me and my future. I have gone from feeling out of my depth to fully believing in my abilities.”

This year, we have welcomed 36 new members to the 1876 Society, many of whom joined at the Opening Doors Bursary Dinner; and over £800,000 has been raised and pledged towards bursaries through our 150th Anniversary Campaign.  We are so grateful to everyone who has made a contribution this year, helping us to ensure that we continue to expand opportunities at South Hampstead in our 150th year.
