STEM Week

During British Science Week, we held our own week to champion Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

Girls across the school engaged with a multitude of STEM related activities both in and out of the classroom, from form time quizzes to exploring the International Space Station via our virtual reality headsets. The week kicked off with an enthusiastic assembly analysing the applications of Physics to Winter Sports, while break-times were buzzing with hands-on fun, from blowing bubbles to experimenting with non-Newtonian fluids.

Sixth Form students devised a challenging Rosalind Franklin themed escape room, Lego Club enthusiasts constructed an impressive rollercoaster, and teams of girls battled to outwit the teachers in the Crystal Maze Maths Challenge. Stunning entries in the school’s inaugural STEM Photography Competition were on display in the exhibition space, showcasing the interdisciplinary links between the Arts and Science.

Our Year 8 STEM Ambassadors attended a GDST Techathon on how to use technology to develop smarter cities. Ahead of our move to guided home learning, ambassadors Katla and Talia stepped up their Science blogging, updating their online STEM calendar and planet of the month entries.

The school’s first Aspirational Futures Fair invited girls from local schools, alongside our pupils, to explore the diverse range of STEM-related careers and higher education pathways available. The Department for Education also interviewed our Director of STEM, Ms Russo, to discuss the myriad of ways we encourage young women to consider a future in STEM fields – watch the short film on Twitter.
