GCSE Success

Year 11 pupils collected an exceptional set of GCSE results this morning, with over 76% of entries awarded top grades: A*/9/8s.

Congratulations to all our students on their phenomenal results, which represent South Hampstead’s highest ever percentage of top grades on results day. In total, 54% of entries were awarded the highest possible grade A*/9 and over 76% were awarded A*/9/8s. This is the third year in a row that over 70% of entries at South Hampstead have achieved the top GCSE grades (A*/9/8s). Overall, over 92% of entries this year were 9/8/7s or their equivalent A*/As.

Pupils performed well across the board. In arts and humanities subjects, those achieving the top tier grade 9 (equivalent to the very highest A*) included 73% of German, 76% of Latin, 63% of Spanish and 64% of Religious Studies entries. Furthermore, 79% of English Literature and 81% of History entries were awarded the top grade.  One South Hampstead pupil was commended as one of the top performers in the country in the GCSE English Language exam.

Pupils also achieved excellent results in STEM subjects, with a high proportion of girls achieving the very top grade 9: Biology (55%), Chemistry (60%), Design & Technology (50%), Maths (43%) and Physics (41%). In addition, more than a third of all students took Further Maths, with 58% achieving the top grade, including 8 girls who were awarded distinctions.

Mrs Bingham praised the students and teachers for their hard work in securing such successful results. “It’s incredible just how much our Year 11s have achieved this year. The Into the Woods musical, the Middlesex Netball Finals, concerts galore, art exhibitions, running societies, fundraising, the Gym & Dance show… these results are the icing on the cake of an impressively busy year. We look forward to welcoming them into the Sixth Form in September, where they will doubtless embrace the numerous exciting opportunities that lie ahead with typical South Hampstead enthusiasm.”

Today’s outstanding GCSE results come a week after South Hampstead’s best set of A Level results when more students than ever achieved the very top grades. For more detailed results, click here.
